Tuesday 15 January 2019 from 19:00-21:00, CGP meeting - all welcome! Guest speaker: Jayne Forbes, Extinction Rebellion
How many climate change protests and wildlife marches does it take to change the mind of a politician? Apparently none.
So 2018 saw the birth of Extinction Rebellion (sometimes shortened as XR), an international social movement with a seriously headline grabbing agenda. A large number of its activists have pledged to be arrested and are prepared to go to prison, similar to the mass arrest tactics of the Committee of 100 in 1961.
Established with about one hundred academics signing a call to action and launched at the end of October by Roger Hallam, Gail Bradbrook, Simon Bramwell and other activists from the campaign group Rising Up!, the movement staged various acts of civil disobedience during November in London.
Inspired by Occupy, Mahatma Gandhi, the Suffragettes and Martin Luther King, Extinction Rebellion intends to rally support worldwide around a common sense of urgency to tackle climate breakdown.
What do you think? Let's debate the issue.
